Sprites VS. 3D Models?

Well the Pokemon series has been running strong for nearly 20 years, and as Nintendo progresses to the 3DS and Wii U systems, will the classic 2D sprites of the Pokemon characters, layouts, and designs last any longer? Mario and various other classic Nintendo games have seen more 3D games lately, but what about Pokemon?

Sprites are already being seen on a decrease in the more recent games; however, will Pokemon survive the downfall or will it too move onto 3D models? Pokemon Mystery Dungeon already made the jump to three dimensional models, so what about the main series? Would you like the change, or would you prefer the classic style?

I personally am neutral on this question. While I did grow up with the 2D sprites, I'm not sure as to how much more they can improve on the style. Black and White seemed to push the limits of the 2D sprites with animated sprites and designs, and while it was very nice, I don't know if they can go even further than that. The 3D Pokemon games always did interest me (example Pokemon XD), and I would love to see more games with 3D models of the Pokemon characters in a battling system. However, I wouldn't want to see the 2D sprites disappear just in favour of 3D models.

I personally like to see both live on; however, let's see. Your thoughts?
